Carpets Inter, one of Thailand’s leading carpet manufacturers, has announced that it has recycled more than 746 million post-consumer PET plastic bottles into its EcoSoft PET Felt cushion backing, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and the circular economy.
The company says its proprietary EcoSoft backing transforms discarded single-use drinking water bottles into high-performance carpet backing that delivers environmental and performance benefits for commercial flooring applications.
More Than 50 Plastic Bottles Recycled Per Square Meter
According to Carpets Inter, every square meter of EcoSoft PET Felt cushion backing contains recycled material from more than 50 single-use 550 ml PET water bottles.
The company highlighted the environmental impact of plastic bottle waste, noting that:
- Only one in five plastic bottles is recycled.
- Plastic bottles can take 400 to 1,000 years to decompose.
- Manufacturing bottled water requires significantly more water than the volume contained in the bottle itself.
By converting plastic waste into carpet backing, Carpets Inter aims to divert millions of bottles from landfills and the environment while promoting more sustainable flooring solutions.
EcoSoft Backing Combines Sustainability with Performance
Made from 80% post-consumer recycled PET and an additional 5–10% post-industrial recycled PET, EcoSoft has been engineered to meet the demanding performance requirements of modular carpet tiles.
According to the company, EcoSoft outperforms conventional PVC, bitumen, hard-backed carpet tiles and urethane cushion backing in several key areas, including:
- Durability
- Underfoot comfort
- Acoustic performance
- Indoor air quality
- Workplace wellness
The recyclable backing also contributes to lower environmental impact throughout the product lifecycle.
