Sicomin and Premier Composite Technologies Collaborate on Mataf Extension Project in Mecca

Sicomin, a global leader in epoxy resin production, has announced its collaboration with Premier Composite Technologies (PCT) on the prestigious Mataf extension project at the Holy Mosque of Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The project, part of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah Bin Abd Al-Aziz’s initiative, highlights the transformative potential of composite materials in architectural applications.

The focal point of this project is the expansive Mataf Ceiling, spanning 216,800 square meters, which required an innovative solution to meet demanding weight and performance criteria. Sicomin’s advanced epoxy systems, quadraxial stitched glass fabric, and carbon reinforcements were integral in developing lightweight, high-performance soffit panels for the ceiling structure.

Innovative Composite Solutions for a Landmark Project

Designed, fabricated, and installed by PCT, the Mataf Ceiling consists of intricately crafted panels featuring Arabic mashrabiya patterns, constructed from ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) and engineered stone agglomerate inlays. These panels, measuring up to 12 x 3 meters, adhere to strict weight requirements of 67 kg/m² while integrating essential features such as acoustic insulation, fire protection, and custom LED lighting.

To meet the stringent technical and fire safety standards, Sicomin provided its SGi 128 Bio Gelcoat and SR 1122 Fire Retardant Epoxy. Working closely with PCT, Sicomin developed a custom lower-viscosity version of SR 1122 to enhance fiber wet-out, thereby optimizing production efficiency and meeting high-output demands during peak production periods. The fire-resistant epoxy panels, coated with SGi 128 Bio Gelcoat, successfully passed ASTM E84 Class A certification after rigorous third-party fire testing.

Efficient Supply Chain and Large-Scale Production

Recognizing the ambitious timeline of the project, Sicomin established a dedicated warehouse in Dubai to ensure a seamless and reliable supply chain. This logistical move enabled PCT to maintain an impressive production rate of 6,000 square meters per month while accommodating design approvals, mold fabrication challenges, and installation constraints.

The Mataf extension is a key phase in the larger Shamia Expansion, which began in 2014 and resumed in 2020 following a temporary pause. Set for completion in Q3 2025, this milestone project underscores the increasing role of composite materials in large-scale architectural developments, with further collaborations and expansions already in discussion.

Industry Leaders Reflect on the Project’s Significance

Ken Marcovich, CEO of Sicomin, emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting its partners: “We are proud to have expanded our UAE warehousing and production capabilities to ensure a fast and secure supply chain for PCT. Our mission is to help our customers achieve their goals by providing Fire Resistant, GreenPoxy, and Architectural systems at an industrial scale, ensuring no supply limitations.”

Hannes Waimer, CEO of Premier Composite Technologies, praised the collaborative effort: “The Mataf Extension has been a landmark project for us. The complexity of the Mataf Ceiling demanded a unique blend of innovative materials, precise engineering, and flawless execution. Sicomin’s custom resin development and reliable material supply were crucial in helping us meet the project’s rigorous specifications and deadlines.”

A section of the Mataf Ceiling, manufactured by PCT, will be showcased at Sicomin’s booth during JEC World 2025 in Paris, offering industry professionals a closer look at the breakthrough composite solutions that defined this iconic project.
