How to Clean Carpet (Easy)?

If you have a carpet that needs to be cleaned, the first and most important step is to know the type of carpet and carpet yarns, otherwise, you may cause serious and irreparable damage to your carpet.

Especially when you have to use chemicals and detergents to wash the stains, this understanding of the carpet is more important. Carpets are often products of artificial and petroleum-based materials such as polypropylene, nylon, acrylic, and polyester, or natural materials like wool, silk, cotton, jute, etc.

Regular cleaning

Keep your carpets free of stains with regular cleaning

Remove small stains with cleaners or homemade solutions

Spray cleaners can remove many stains with minimal effort

Test your cleaners on a hidden area first and use a white cloth to see if the color bleeds

For water-based stains, the best homemade solution is mixing one part vinegar and two parts hot water

Wax or gum can easily remove by freezing with ice first or freeze with an inverted can of compressed air

Some parts of the home with heavy traffic from kids or pets may need regular cleaning, for this, you can use a carpet shampooer to remove heavy dirt and hair.

Ink stain
For removing ink stains you need denatured alcohol, an old toothbrush, a wet-dry vacuum, and some light-colored rags. If the stain is new or still fresh push light-colored rags on it, and then you should soak it in alcohol for about 5 minutes, don’t use too much alcohol, and only pour alcohol on the stain spot.

Once the alcohol is soaked for minutes use the clean rag and rub on the ink stain. You can repeat the process if the result is not satisfying on the 1st try.

For better results, you can massage the carpet with an old toothbrush and then wait for 5 minutes. If your clean rag is not so good for collecting the alcohol from the carpet surface it’s better to use a wet/dry vacuum cleaner, only don’t forget b before using the vacuum cleaner remove the filter. As you know the filter is only used when it is working dry. Repeat this process as many times as necessary.

Grease stain
For cleaning grease stains you need wet/dry vacuum cleaner, a spoon, baking soda, water, dish soap, denatured alcohol, an old toothbrush, a spray bottle, and clean rags.

  • First of all, you should liberally sprinkle the baking soda on the grease stain and push it down with a spoon on the spot to make sure the baking soda meets perfectly all carpet yarn surfaces. This step helps us to absorb liquid in grease.
  • Leave the baking soda on the carpet for 3-5 minutes and after that vacuum the baking soda with a dry vacuum cleaner. Now we need a cleaning solution. Mix one cup of denatured alcohol with one spoon of dish soap and pour it is a spray bottle. Then spray it on the stain and massage it with a toothbrush. Repeat this process as many times as necessary.

Nail Polish stain
If you want to get rid of nail polish stains on your carpet you need Acetone, clean rags, and paper towels. It’s easy to do. Pour the acetone on the stain, wait some minutes and then rub your rags or paper towels on it and repeat it until achieving a good result.
Please note that acetone is a strong solvent and it can damage your skin or even your carpet. when you are using acetone don’t smoke and be careful because it is flammable too.

Wine or coffee stain
Wine or coffee stains are one the most common cases that happen on commercial and residential floors and carpets. For removing this we need hydrogen peroxide, dish soap, light color towels, and a wet dry vacuum cleaner.

  • At first, we should lightly push the paper towel on the carpet surface to absorb liquids as much as possible. Now it’s time to prepare our cleaning solutions by mixing 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide and one teaspoon of dish soap. Soak a towel or clean rag in the solution and transfer to the carpet surface and wait for 8 minutes.
  • Then with a dry towel or rag absorb the solution from the carpet and repeat the process until removing the stain completely. In the end, you can use a vacuum cleaner.

Heavy cleaning

For heavy cleaning of your carpets, you need a carpet cleaner for a carpet overhaul that you can rent or buy if you have a commercial place like a hotel or office. For heavy cleaning, you need to remove all furniture before you begin. Continue the carpet cleaning process until the water runs clear. Then run a final; pass with clean water and no detergent to sure you have a great result.

Special carpet care

If you’ve got very expensive carpets or dirt that won’t shift, it might be time to call in the professionals. Expensive and luxury carpets like Persian carpets, 100% natural silk carpets, antique carpets, and … is not a good case for testing traditional ways to remove stains and dirt and they need special treatments and non-harmful substances to clean. The expert should know enough about the carpet yarn materials and characteristics and also knowledge about natural and vegetable dyes.

If you have an expensive and antique carpet that is damaged or torn you need darning service by an expert.

How to darn a carpet

Darning is a traditional and old art in Iran, which came into existence alongside the art of carpet weaving, and it is a skill that can re-enliven an old carpet.

Here we take only a cursory look at the stages of darning:

  1. The rug is often washed before darning. The carpet is then installed backward on the frame.
  2. Then, the darner starts repairing any damage using threads that are the same color as those of the rug. If the threads of the rug are discolored, you have to use similarly discolored threads. The darner picks the color by looking at the threads on the length margins.
  3. If the piles either at the ends or the other sides of the rug are damaged, they should be repaired.
  4. Some types of repair work have their own methods, such as moth damage, which requires experience and skill on the part of the darner.

  5. Tears and burns on the rug have to be darned with care. It is important for the pattern and color to match those of the original rug; otherwise, the discrepancy would be visible and would devalue the rug.
  6. To repair any ripping, one should mark the spot on the back of the carpet with a marker, and if it is very deep, it has to be cut out entirely using a cutter and then be darned separately.
  7. In order for the colors of the different parts of the rug to match one another, the darner should have some knowledge of dyeing, so he won’t be hindered in the dyeing stage.
  8. Finally, if the color of the carpet doesn’t match the other threads, the darner should use the same colors in scissoring, warp winding, and ironing once the darning is done to reach the desired result.
